Ms. Tammy I. Barlet is a junior at Temple University pursuing a Bachelor Degree in Public Health and Vice-President of the Temple Veterans Association.
Tammy Barlet served for over eight years in the United States Coast Guard, beginning in 1995. As an Operations Specialist Third Class Petty Officer, she served on board the USCGC Chase (WHEC-718) and Vessel Traffic Service Houston/Galveston. During her time on the Cutter Chase, Ms. Barlet participated in numerous tactical operations such as Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT 97, Southeast Asia) and Military Interdiction Operations (MIO, Persian Gulf). The Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation from Vice Admiral Card, Distinguished Coast Guard Battle “E” Ribbon, Coast Guard Special Operations, and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal were only a few of the medals and ribbons she earned while on board the Chase. Her last duty station was at Vessel Traffic Service Houston/Galveston, where she directed over 200 ships and tows per shift through the 54 mile-long Houston Ship Channel. Being stationed at a land unit gave her the opportunity to participate in temporary duties such as the USCGC Eagle (WIX-327) where she spent a summer training academy cadets, and also performing in New Orleans during two Mardi Gras seasons with the SARCats. Before her time ended in the Coast Guard, Ms. Barlet was awarded the Coast Guard Achievement Medal for an incident which could easily have become a Homeland Security Threat.
After returning home to Hamburg, PA, Ms. Barlet earned a certification as a pharmacy technician and worked in the pharmaceutical field for 10 years. Three years ago, she made the commitment to return to school. After completing her general education at community colleges in Lehigh and Berks Counties, she continued to Temple University to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health and Master’s Degree of Science in Epidemiology. Since she has been at Temple, Ms. Barlet has performed with the Singing Owls, been active with Temple Veterans Association and has volunteered at the William Schaefer VA Hospital in Philadelphia. She spends her free time with friends and family geocaching, kayaking, and enjoying the outdoors.
